Top Free (or Nearly Free) Things to Do This Summer in Fairfax County

Happy summer, Lorton! With schools letting out and some long days ahead, keeping your family busy without breaking the bank may seem like a daunting task. These are some of our favorite summer activities that you won’t want to miss this year.

Burke Lake Park
Where: Fairfax Station
When: Daily 8:00 AM – 7:00 PM

Why we love it: Burke Lake Park is 888 acres of heaven nestled in Fairfax Station. The park offers fishing, biking, and boating spots on land and sea. For a small fee, you can take a ride on the miniature train to explore even more of the park.

Outdoor Movie Nights on the Liberty Green
Where: Lorton
When: June 8 and June 22, 8:30 PM; August 17 and August 24, 8:00 PM

Why we love it: Outdoor movie nights are a great way to relax with your family. Enjoy warm summer evenings under the stars on the Liberty Green. We’ll be screening Rio (G), Fantastic Mr. Fox (PG), The Princess Bride (PG), and Ice Age (PG).

Potomac Nationals
Where: Woodbridge
When: Various dates throughout the summer

Why we love it: There’s no need to trek into D.C. to catch a professional baseball game. The Potomac Nationals are based out of Woodbridge. You can get tickets for as little as $12, so you can get your whole family or group together for an evening with America’s favorite pastime.

Batting Cages at Braddock Park
Where: Fairfax
When: Monday through Friday, 12:00 PM – 9:00 PM; Saturday through Sunday, 10:00 AM – 9:00 PM

Why we love it: Get in on the baseball fun at Braddock Park this summer. The batting cages at the Dugout have nine lighted cages with five different speeds. It’s only $5 for 36 pitches, or you can also rent cages out by the minutes or hours.

Summer Reading Adventure
Where: Fairfax
When: Begins June 13

Why we love it: Keep the bookworm in your family busy with Fairfax County Public Library’s summer reading program. In addition to challenging readers of all ages, the library is hosting events throughout the summer with Interact Story Theatre, Historical Swordsmanship, and more.

Two-Buck Tuesdays at University Mall Theatres
Where: Fairfax
When: Every Tuesday

Why we love it: With Two Buck Tuesdays at University Mall Theatres, you don’t have to miss any of the latest releases. The theatre offers other deals throughout the week for children, seniors, and students.

Pools and Waterparks

Pirate’s Cove Waterpark
Where: Lorton
When: Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day Weekend, hours vary

Why we love it: NOVA Parks operates five low-cost waterparks across the state, and we’re lucky enough to have one right here in Lorton. Entry is $8.75 for individuals 42 inches or taller and $7.00 for individuals shorter than 42 inches. Family passes are also available so you can keep the fun going all summer long.

South Run RECenter
Where: Springfield
When: Monday through Friday, 5:00 AM – 9:00 PM; Saturday, 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM; Sunday, 7:30 AM – 8:00 PM

Why we love it: The South Run RECenter’s indoor pool is perfect if you’re looking to cool off but want to stay out of the sun. Splash around with your family for free while enjoying saunas, a poolside spa, and an outdoor sundeck.
